Jesus is Lord.

I’m not certain if you agree with those 3 words, but I’m pretty sure you could agree with these 3: something is lord.

Something — or someone — has to call the shots, and while people may not ultimately agree with who or what sits in that seat of authority, all it takes is a quick look around to realize the truth that the seat of authority must be filled.

For some, money is lord. For others, love is lord. Maybe friendship is lord in your love or, more specifically, a friend. In a culture living with a global pandemic reality, fear has become lord for a multitude of people. I know others for whom a diagnosis is lord.

My point isn’t to throw shade at the different lords we choose, but rather to highlight one of the reasons why Jesus is the Lord of lords. In other words, what makes Jesus the best Lord you and I could ever choose to occupy that one seat of authority over our lives?

The answer may surprise you in its simplicity: Jesus is the only Lord who leads us. Every other lord drives us.

We can’t get enough money, and so we’re driven to work harder, to cut corners, to finalize an underhanded deal for more profit.

We don’t feel loved enough, and so we’re driven like crazed animals into unhealthy relationships with people we would never have imagined ourselves with. Worse still, we stay in those relationships because we’re so afraid of being alone. See how that fear drives us? Whatever drives us, controls us.

But not the Lord of lords. He doesn’t want to control us. He wants to lead us.

Other lords will chain your hands and drive you to captivity. But the Lord of lords wants to take your hand and lead you to freedom.

Today, let Him. Make the choice to stop being driven and start being led.
